Florida was mainly her home from 1938 to 1943, when she moved on to Mexico for a stay of nearly a year. In 1945, along with some eight-hundred other contestants, Bishop entered the Houghton Mifflin poetry competition, submitting a selection of thirty poems, most of them written during the 1930's and published in the Partisan Review. In 1917 she went to live in a small town in North China. After five years she moved to Nanking, where Pearl Buck taught English literature at the local university.
